Late-night landings at CMB: how to handle a 2am arrival

Arrivals 5 min read

A large share of long-haul flights land at Bandaranaike International between midnight and 4am. Here is the calm way to deal with it.

Why so many flights land at night

Connections through the Gulf and South-East Asia tend to reach Colombo in the small hours. It is normal, the terminal is staffed, and immigration is usually quicker than during the daytime peaks.

Do not plan a long drive

The temptation is to push straight on to Kandy or Ella and save a day. In practice a winding three-to-five hour hill drive after a long-haul flight leaves you arriving exhausted, checking in at dawn and sleeping through the morning anyway.

Staying near the airport for one short night and starting fresh usually costs nothing in sightseeing time.

Where to stay for a night landing

  • Katunayake — five to ten minutes from the terminal, purely practical
  • Seeduwa — ten minutes, quieter and beside the lagoon
  • Negombo — twenty minutes, and you wake up on a beach
  • Colombo — forty-five minutes, worth it only if the city is your plan anyway

How a night transfer works

Transfers run 24 hours, so the only difference at 2am is that the roads are empty and the drive is faster. The driver still waits inside arrivals with a name board and still tracks the flight, so a two-hour delay simply moves the pickup.

Because the price is fixed before you fly, there is no late-night negotiation at the rank when you are least equipped for one.

The reverse: pre-dawn departures

Early flights out of CMB mean pickups at 2 or 3am from Negombo or Colombo, and much earlier from the hills. Tell us the flight time and we work backwards from the check-in counter rather than the departure.

Frequently asked questions

Do you run airport transfers at 2am?

Yes. Night transfers run every day and the driver still meets you inside arrivals with a name board.

Is it safe to drive in Sri Lanka at night?

On the expressway and the main airport roads, yes — our drivers do these runs daily. Long winding hill routes after midnight are the ones we suggest avoiding when you can.

Ready to book your transfer?

Send your flight number, destination and group size and we'll confirm one fixed all-in price. Pay the driver at the end of the journey.
