The airport's position is actually an advantage. Negombo beach is twenty minutes away, the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway runs from the doorstep, and the northern road towards Dambulla and Sigiriya lets you reach the Cultural Triangle without ever entering Colombo traffic.
What happens after you land
Immigration and baggage reclaim are straightforward, and the duty-free hall on the arrivals side is the one oddity — it sells household electronics rather than perfume. Beyond it you reach the public arrivals hall, which is where drivers wait.
A pre-booked driver stands in that hall holding a name board, so you walk straight out rather than negotiating at the rank. If you also want a local SIM, the counters sit in the arrivals area before you exit; your driver will wait while you buy one.
